How we test your store
A scan finds some barriers. In the Checkout audit, a person walks your shopping path the way a shopper would, then tells you the exact fix. An independent specialist who works for us does the test. Every report states the pages, the tools and the date.
What the person does, page by page
Home page
- Open the menu and the search with the keyboard only.
- Check that the page has a clear title and headings, in a sensible order.
- Follow links to a collection and a product. Focus must always be visible.
Product page
- Choose a size, a color and a quantity with the keyboard.
- Listen to the screen reader: product name, price, options, and what “Add to cart” says back.
- Check that each photo has a useful text description.
Cart
- Change a quantity, remove an item, and add a discount code.
- If the cart opens as a drawer, check that focus moves in and comes back out.
- Reach the checkout button without a mouse.
Checkout, up to payment
- Fill in contact and shipping with the keyboard.
- Leave fields empty on purpose. Check that the errors are announced and easy to find.
- Stop where payment details are asked. We never place an order or type a card number.
What we use
Keyboard only
Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, arrow keys and Escape. No mouse. We look for things we cannot reach, cannot leave, or cannot see focus on.
A screen reader
We listen to what the page says out loud. Names, prices, options, errors and buttons must make sense without seeing the screen.
Zoom to 400%
The page at 400% zoom is about the size of a small phone screen. Nothing may be cut off, hidden or need sideways scrolling.
We also run an automated scan like our free one on each page, to catch what a machine can catch fast.
What is in your report
- Each barrier, with who it blocks.
- What our tester did, and what the screen reader said.
- The exact fix, with a code example when it helps, and where to change it in Shopify.
- Who can make the change: your theme, an app, your content, or Shopify’s checkout.
- A fix list, most urgent first, ready for your developer.
- The pages we tested, the tools and the date.
You get it in 5 business days (Monday to Friday, not counting U.S. federal holidays) from the latest of your payment, your store address and any storefront password we need. If we are going to miss that date, we will tell you before it. If 2 business days pass after it, we refund you in full without you asking. One re-check of your fixes is included within 60 days.
Known limits
We would rather tell you now than have you find out later.
- A scan finds part of the barriers. Only a person can tell if a page makes sense to a shopper using a screen reader.
- This is a focused test, not a full-site WCAG audit. We test four steps on one path, not every page of your store.
- A report is true for the day we tested. If your theme or an app changes, new barriers can appear.
- Some parts of checkout are controlled by Shopify. We still report them, and we tell you who can change them.
- It is technical information, not legal advice or a certification. Fixing barriers helps shoppers, but we cannot promise any legal outcome.
What we need, and what we never ask for
We need your store address. If your store is password-protected, we also need the storefront password, and we delete it when the audit ends.
We never ask for your admin login, staff accounts or payment details. While we test, you may see test visits or an abandoned checkout in your store. That is us.
